Description: A large, wide spreading shrub with lance-shaped matt green leaves which are silky underneath. The pendant highly fragrant, saucer-shaped white flowers have crimson stamens. Similar to Magnolia sinensis for its wonderful fragrance.The fruiting cones are cylindrical and pinkish in early October, gradually turning brown by mid-November.
History: Native to Gansu, Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou, China. Named for E.H Wilson who discovered it in 1904. Received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 1993.
Magnolia Growing Tips: Full sun to part shade lover, best grown in consistently moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Provide sheltered site as buds and flowers may be damaged by cold winds, and late frosts. Shape and size can be controlled by pruning which should be done either immediately after flowering or during late summer.
